Charlie Reiter’s ride at the 122nd U.S. Open ended Friday, but it was a wild ride in the second round.

Reiter, from Palm Desert and playing in his first major golf championship at 22 years old, pieced together a 5-over 75 on Friday at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. While the round was one shot better than his opening round Thursday, the second round was a much bigger roller coaster for Reiter.

Reiter’s Friday round included five birdies, six bogeys, two double bogeys and just five pars. The up-and-down round gave Reiter a 36-hole total of 11-over 151 for the Open, missing the cut that came in at 3-over pard.

Needing a strong round to have a chance to make the cut after an opening 76, those dreams ended early Friday for Reiter. Playing the back nine first, Reiter bogeyed his first hole, then made consecutive double bogeys on the 12th and 13th holes to fall to 11-over par for the national championship. But Reiter rallied with three birdies and a bogey in his next four holes.

On the front nine of The Country Club, Reiter added two birdies and four bogeys, finishing with consecutive pars on the eighth and nine holes. After the opening four holes, Reiter played the rest of his Friday round in even par.

Reiter’s two-day score of 151 was the same score as six-time major winner and six-time U.S. Open runner-up Phil Mickelson.

For the two days, Reiter’s driving was a struggle, hitting just eight of 28 fairways, and that led to him hitting just 15 of 36 greens from the thick Open rough.

Reiter, who will remain amateur through the summer, reached the U.S. Open through both local and sectional qualifying in recent weeks. By making the U.S. Open field, Reiter is automatically in the field of the U.S. Amateur in August. He will then begin the PGA Tour qualifying process, with the first stage of the Korn Ferry Tour qualifying in September at Ironwood Country Club in Palm Desert.
