MILL HALL — The Prayer Shawl Ministry of the Bald Eagle United Presbyterian Church met on Wednesday, April 6. For April, the ministry group was happy to welcome two officers from the Lock Haven City Police Department. Kristin Smith, the Chief of Police and Lt. Elizabeth Gregory were presented with knitted and crocheted items that were made by the Prayer Shawl Ministry’s needleworkers.

These handiworks are considered to be “comfort items” that the police officers will keep in their cruisers to hand out to children and individuals who may be upset because of different circumstances such as domestic abuse, automobile accidents, fires or other traumatic situations. The Prayer Shawl Ministry (PSM) provided lap afghans, shawls, baby sweaters and baby blankets and hat and scarf sets to the officers.

Jane Wynn, the Prayer Shawl Ministry spokesperson, also brought the group up-to-date on “Project Linus,” that distributes blankets to children that are in Pa. hospitals. The blankets are provided to children ranging from infants through teens. There are guidelines to use as far as the sizes of the blankets, from crib-sized of 40” X 60″ up to the dimensions of a twin-sized bed for teenagers. The blankets can be crocheted, knitted or machine sewn and should be made in bright, cheerful colors.

The needleworkers were able to see all of the bunnies that had been collected by the church for the Susquehanna Valley Big Twins annual Bunny Run. The church is a collection and drop off site for the community to bring their donations of stuffed bunnies, lambs and chicks that are then distributed to children in area hospitals during the Easter holiday.

Jane shared with the group several thank you letters that were received by the PSM, along with a monetary donation that had been given in memory of her husband, Dr. Thomas Wynn. Dr. Wynn passed away on Feb. 27, 2022 and had expressed his desire to have any memorials be made to either the American Cancer Society or to the Prayer Shawl Ministry.

Needleworkers were informed that there is a great need for prayer shawls and lap-sized afghans that are made large enough to provide comfort and warmth to those receiving them.

One needleworker made 100 machine-sewn tray mats for a nursing home to place on their food trays to cheer up those residents who get their daily meals.

The PSM invites other needleworkers to become involved with the group. The term “needleworkers” is used to describe both men and women who crochet, knit or sew. All skill levels are invited. If you’d like to learn to crochet or knit there are people there to coach you on. Yarn is provided free of charge for the needleworkers to use. The yarn is funded by the Clinton County Community Foundation. The group meets at the Bald Eagle United Presbyterian Church, 111 Main St., in Mill Hall on the first Wednesday of the month for a noon luncheon. The next Prayer Shawl Ministry meeting will be held on May 4, 2022.
