A group of enthusiastic “knitwits” are making a difference in the community, one blanket at a time.

The KnitWits for the Needy are a group of local knitters who have been meeting up every Saturday for the past seven years at the Rosebank Union Church in Hurlingham to knit blankets and scarves.

At the end of each month, all of the vibrant and colourful knitted items are rounded up and donated to community organisations and people in need across the community.

According to the group’s Greta Collier, what started out with a simple Facebook post about her knitting morphed into a group of wonderful women making a difference in the lives of dozens of people.

“We are now a group of over 50 people who work to make the KnitWits for Needy happen. Many of the ladies come to the church and others knit behind the scenes in their personal capacity.”

Over the years donations have gone to Hotel Hope Ministries, Rays of Hope, Mother of Peace Home for Children, Tears, CHOC, and many more organisations that facilitate care assistance for individuals in need.

“We also participated in the 67 Blankets for their secret scarf mission. We knitted and hung scarves at the Reea Care Home in Craighall Park.”

Collier added that the group is also on the hunt for new members and wool donations because there are always people who need blankets and scarves.
