I do not think there is anything that says fall more than a county fair. We have many surrounding county fairs we get to enjoy, as well as Mountain Heritage Day at Western Carolina University.

Fairs make me think of barn animals, funnel cakes and food competitions. When I was in high school, I knitted a scarf and entered it into a fair. To my surprise, I got a blue ribbon and even got a cash prize. Five dollars was a lot for a ninth-grade kid without a job.

Have you been crafty this past year, or have you taken up a new hobby like beekeeping or canning?

It is almost time for the Mountain State Fair, which means the Pony Express will be making rounds soon. The Pony Express is a fun name for a service provided by the Mountain State Fair in partnership with county cooperative extension offices. If someone wishes to enter an item or items into one of the competitions, they simply fill out the entry form online, print the confirmation page and bring the confirmation page along with the items to the extension office by Aug. 22. There is also an app you can download to make the process even easier. The app is called ShoWorks Passport.

The Pony Express service will pick up all the entries, take them to the fair and then they will deliver the items back to the cooperative extension office after the fair is over. Return date of the service is Sept. 23, so items will be able to be picked up after that date.

If you have never entered items into a fair, you might not be familiar with what is accepted. Categories include art, crafts, quilts, woodworking, horticulture, honey, preserved foods, baked foods, photography, woodcarving, jewelry, clothing and hand weaving. There are also youth categories if you have a crafty child who wants to enter items. All items being entered must have been made within the past year. Items made before last year’s Mountain State Fair will not be accepted.

Again, the deadline to take advantage of the Pony Express service is Aug. 22. You are welcome to bring items before that date and we will store them here for you until they are picked up.

For more information about the Mountain State Fair and how to enter, contact me at ekmcclure@ncat.edu or by calling 586-4009.

Don’t forget we have a Facebook page “NC Cooperative Extension-Jackson County” you can follow to learn about upcoming programs, or visit our website at Jackson.ces.ncsu.edu.
