EASTERN N.C. (WITN) - Several organizations across the east will host memorials for the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

The Morehead City-Beaufort Elks Lodge and the Pet Adoption and Welfare society will hold a parade around the Inner Banks Saturday.

It will start at the lodge on Miller Farm Road, proceed through part of Newport, cross over to Highway 70 and travel back into Morehead City where it will cross the bridge to Atlantic Beach.

Participants will then travel down the banks to Emerald Isle, cross the bridge into Cape Carteret and then return to the lodge following Highway 24.

After the parade, there will be food, entertainment and a silent auction.

Organizers say the $25 admission covers the ride and all following events, and will help wounded warriors get home during the holidays. Some of the funds will also go to aid first responders.

Registration begins at 9 Saturday morning and the parade starts at noon.

Wayne Community College will host its annual 9/11 tribute stair climb Sunday.

Emergency medical and law enforcement students, their instructors and other first responders will run the equivelant of the 78 flights of stairs first responders climbed when responding to the attacks on the World Trade Center.

The event is held each year to honor the 403 first responders who died in the line of duty that day.

The public is invited to the Fairfield Harbour 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on Sunday, September 11. The ceremony will take place at the 9/11 Memorial located at Fairfield Harbour Community Center and Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department, 585 Broad Creek Road.

The ceremony is from 8:00 am – 9:00 am and will include a color guard from Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station, remarks, and the laying of a wreath.

In New Bern, a memorial will take place at 3:00 pm Sunday, at the Firemen’s Museum.

In Havelock, at 8:40 a.m. there will be an observance that Includes a moment of silence, remarks from the police and fire chief, and the mayor. It will take place at the Havelock 9/11 Memorial on U.S. 70 & Cunningham Blvd.

A National Day of Service and Remembrance will be held at Wildwood Park, 3450 Blue Heron Drive, Greenville, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Volunteer an hour or two of your time in honor of 9/11 Day. We’ll work together as a community to maintain and improve the trails at the park. Bring work gloves, a water bottle, and wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.

AMVETS Post 1111 in conjunction with Lenoir County Emergency Services and Greene Lamp will be holding the 21st Annual Kinston/Lenoir County 9/11 Memorial Service at 6:15 pm at Kinston Fire Station One across from Grainger Stadium. Parking will be available in the stadium parking lot. Incorporated into this year’s service, individuals who attend will be given a small American Flag. At the conclusion of the service, the flags will be placed together near in a sign of solidarity. Also, anyone who attends who would like to take 2-3 minutes to comment how 9/11 has affected them they will be afforded the opportunity.

The public is welcome to attend and encourage the participants.
