Today America takes some time to pause and remember the heroes who never came home.

Memorial Day is meant to honor the veterans who died in active military service.

At the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, there is a special commemoration ceremony at 11 a.m., featuring keynote speaker Keri Hart.

Keri is the widow/spouse of 1st Sgt. Casey James Hart. Casey was a 24-year veteran of the Louisiana National Guard, serving in both Operation Iraqi Freedom and most recently Operation Inherent Resolve. Keri and Casey were married for 13 years and together they have one beautiful daughter, Taylen, age 10.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., there's a Knit your Bit event where veterans visiting the museum will have the opportunity to collect a scarf as a part of the Knit Your Bit initiative, with more than 10,000 knitters and crocheters participating throughout all 50 states. Scarves will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At 1 p.m., the Victory Belles will perform so veterans can enjoy the music of the 1940s.

Through the Blue Star Museums Network Program, active-duty service members and up to five family members receive free Museum admission.
