Men have worn scarves since ancient times. In fact, in ancient Rome scarves were worn to keep clean from all the dust and muck that was common during that era. Back then, the cloth was often referred to sudarium- meaning sweat cloth- naturally, because it was used to wipe the wearer’s sweat throughout the day.

Men wore scarves either around the neck or tied to their belt - as depicted in various Hollywood films by various costume directors. In later times, scarves were worn by soldiers designating a difference in rank between the fabrics silk and cotton. Interestingly enough, Croatian soldiers served as mercenaries with the French army. Men’s scarves were referred to as cravats — meaning Croat. These cravats were the precursor to the necktie.

By the 19th century, the scarf had developed into an essential fashion accessory on a global level. But, still till this day, many American men wear it incorrectly. Sadly, American men drape it around their neck and either let the ends hang down equidistant or they throw one end over the neck and call it a day. For me, it is insulting to the scarf to wear it this way - especially, if it a luxury cashmere scarf.

In order to make an entrance with a scarf is to embrace it and learn how to tie it like the French. In my opinion, the French tie it best. I am sure and certain many YouTube videos exist on how to tie a scarf like the French - nevertheless, here is my advice to you.

Many American men feel that if they pay too much attention to the scarf knot, that it will look too effeminate hence they refrain from wearing it the right way. I beg to differ. I feel that the incorrect way appears ill-fitting and effeminate. Therefore, it is time to man-up to the way you tie your scarf - especially during office hours. The sophisticated look is a sure fire way to get noticed - especially by the ladies fellas.
