A man's friend group was criticized in a viral Reddit thread after they demanded he tell his girlfriend not to wear her headscarf around them.

The anonymous man, known as u/Useful-Broccoli-6329, posted about the incident in Reddit's popular "Am I The A**hole" forum where it received nearly 19,000 upvotes and 2,500 comments. The post can be found here.

According to the Pew Research Center, 69 percent of Muslim women experience religious discrimination, compared to 26 percent of the women in the general public.

It is also estimated that 75 percent of Muslim women experience racial discrimination compared to 40 percent of women in the general public.

In the post titled "AITA For refusing to tell my GF to stop wearing her headscarf in front of my friends?" the man said that his girlfriend of two years is half Arabic and has recently felt like wearing a headscarf.

"She looks cute, I love her and I do not mind at all. Her body, her choice," the post read.

A week ago, the two went out to dinner with his friends who later informed him that two of the girls in the group felt "uncomfortable" and "threatened" by her because she was wearing her headscarf.

"I argued with them that how is that even possible but I was told to inform my GF to stop wearing that in-front of them and that she should respect their boundaries," the post read.

The man said he refuses to tell her to stop wearing her headscarf around the girls. He added that is contemplating leaving the friend group over the situation but said he needs a second opinion because some people think he is in the wrong.

"So tell me reddit, AITA?"

Nearly 2,500 users commented on the post, many criticizing the man's friends for being racist and xenophobic.

"NTA. The other girls do not get the right to tell someone what to wear," one user commented. "That is not a boundary, that is control. They are being racist, & you most definitely should leave the friend group. Kuddos to you for being an amazing boyfriend."

"Would your friends stop using a particular piece of cloth, such as particular coats, if your gf found them to be offensive?" another user commented.

"What these girls are doing is disguising their discrimination behind 'setting boundaries,'" one user said. "Your girlfriend is making them uncomfortable because she is challenging their prejudice against women who wear head scarfs. They don't want to expose their racism/islamophobia/prejudice (whatever it is) so they are asking her to repress her identity expression."

"NTA and leave that xenophobic friend group. F**k them," another wrote.
